>I think that Jerry had gotten kind of bored with the Grateful Dead, and it was sort of like a marriage that had maybe gone on too long... I'm pretty sure Jerry would've stopped playing in the Grateful Dead. I think a lot of it, I hate to say, was really a financial obligation. He needed to earn the money...

>In a 2010 Rolling Stone article Weir explained why the band had split into two camps. "Phil and I were boldly pursuing new musical directions onstage, and some of the guys weren't picking up on it," Weir said. "Phil and I are way more current."

That cheeky Bobby.

Looking forward to hearing Billy sitting in with the David Nelson Band in Hawaii this month! Should be some great shows!
Great interview and link! Thanks!

Love that Billy listens to the GD releases and appreciates the jams as much as we all do. Always hated it when band members would comment that they didn't like to revisit the recordings of shows that leave us amazed after all these years. Good to hear that someone is listening!

>I went back and listened and on a couple of the CDs in that set [E72] – there's one that has "The Other One" into some kind of jam back into "The Other One" – the music is just fantastic. It blows my mind to this moment.

"Some kind of jam"? No specifics, eh? I love it. Now every time I can't remember a date or the specifics of some really great show I've heard, I'll feel better ...

From an article posted 1/12/11

This year's annual Jam Cruise — a sort of Bonnaroo on the, ahem, "high" seas — just made it back to port, but it was "raided" by police and federal agents before it left its Florida dock last week. The raid resulted in 15 different seizures of marijuana, Ecstasy, mushrooms, hash, etc., all mostly in small, personal quantities. One blogger and Jam Cruise attendee said it was more like "a bunch of fat police and DEA types standing around picking their noses" as attendees boarded, with only 15 arrests among the 3,000 passengers.

Participating bands on the cruise included Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, Anders Osborne, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and a couple dozen others.

A better story: The above bands cruisin' the Gulf of Mexico for six days with Chewbacca and other Star Wars characters, an Ivan Neville Texas Hold 'Em tournament, yoga, a casino, zombies, and former American Idol contestants, all on a ridiculous luxury cruise liner. Duuuuuude.
